The Centre Requests Google To Discontinue Running Online Betting Ads.

With so many gambling and betting websites coming into existence, Google observed a lot of these betting and gambling websites were misleading. The Information and Broadcasting Ministry was informed that multiple websites were advertising themselves as professionals in the sports and betting industry. The Consumer Affairs Department also informed the ministry about websites with sports blogs and news. Google was asked to comply with the decision to not publish or broadcast any surrogate advertisements. The Ministry had stated that the advertisements of the news websites, which were in fact surrogate promotions, did not appear to be in strict compliance with the laws in light of the Guidelines for Prevention of Misleading Advertisements and Endorsements for Misleading Advertisements-2022 under the Consumer Protection Act when read with the Advertising Code under the Cable TV Network Regulation Act.

Conclusion

The Ministry's move to issue strict warnings against offshore gaming ads has been praised by the All India Gaming Federation (AIGF). This anti-national platform is still heavily advertising on all major social media platforms, online advertising platforms of big tech, and using major sports and entertainment personalities, it claimed on Wednesday.

"While actions from MIB (Ministry of Information & Broadcasting) have substantially reduced this advertising on TV channels and OTTs," it added. Roland Landers, CEO of the Federation, said: "In our view, one of the most disturbing features of these offshore websites is how they sell and promote their unlawful goods. On TV networks and OTT platforms, they had been continuously pushing adverts during broadcasts of sporting events.

In addition, they have been utilising print, internet, out of home advertising(OOH), and sponsorships of sports teams across Indian leagues. They do this to deeply understand the psyche of the Indian audience.”
